The focus of the masters engineering programme is simple yet powerful: to produce well-rounded engineers with a specialisation in electrical power systems engineering. Delivered in partnership with Glasgow Caledonian University, the ALC’s Master of Science in Electrical Power Systems Engineering qualification is recognized in 26 African countries, (subject to specific registration requirements) within the esteemed Federation of African Engineers. Also, the program holds accreditation from the Accreditation of Higher Education Programs (AHEP), ensuring compliance with the Engineering Council in the UK and international standards set by the International Engineering Alliance (IEA).

At African Leadership College, we believe that educating Africa’s workforce for both today’s and tomorrow’s challenges requires a reimagined and innovative approach to teaching and learning. We do not just produce engineers, we educate engineering leaders who are driven to make a meaningful impact on Africa and the world. Our pedagogical approach is tailored to develop an entrepreneurial mindset, cultivate leadership aptitude, and inculcate technical competence while allowing students the freedom to be actively involved in deciding their academic paths.

Our Masters in Electrical Power Systems Engineering program sets you on an inspiring journey from day one. In the first year, you’ll embark on the Leadership Core, an immersive program that prepares you for a lifelong career shaping the future of Africa and beyond. In the second year of the program, students focus on building a strong foundation in engineering. Moving into the third, fourth and final years, students delve deeper into advanced topics, begin to specialize in electrical engineering and work on an independent Honours project and team project. 

The Leadership Core is a signature ALC program that kicks off our students’ careers. Designed to challenge and prepare ALC students for lifelong leadership in a perpetually evolving world, the program is delivered in the first year over two terms through four courses: Entrepreneurial Leadership, Projects, Data and Decisions and Communicating For Impact. These courses are curated to nurture the 7 meta skills identified by ALC. The Leadership Core launches our students onto a trajectory of success in their academic, professional and other spheres of life.

In the second year, students begin to explore the fundamentals of engineering. Success on the programme depends heavily on a strong grounding in mathematics and students take two maths modules in that year. Computational thinking is introduced in Principles of Programmable Systems A. Students are exposed to concepts in mechanics, fluid flow and thermal physics in Mechanical Principles A and B. They explore the basics of material science in Engineering Materials and practice lab skills in Engineering Applications. They take Electrical Principles and Circuit Theory, a crucial module in that year as it is the foundation of the degree programme. Finally they take Energy Resources Generation and Utilisation whilst on internship.

Term 3

In the third year students start tackling more advanced topics and narrow down their focus into electrical engineering. They still explore other topics such as mechanical engineering in Engineering Design and Analysis 2 and operations management in the similarly named module. Students will learn more advanced maths essential for progression in the programme such as Laplace Transforms in Maths 2B which is crucial in Control Engineering 3 and later Control Engineering 4.

Term 3

This is the year where students apply knowledge from past years and specialise in power systems. Students will explore power electronic systems, an essential component in for example electric cars and delve into the core of power transmission and distribution in High Voltage Technologies & Condition Assessment or Power Systems Analysis and Protection. Students will complete a pivotal part and perhaps the highlight of their degree in that final year, the Honours project, an independent technical research project conceived and carried out by the student over a period of 6 months which concludes with a dissertation submission and a presentation.

In Year 5, students cover advanced modules in specialised areas of electrical power systems, including Advanced AC and DC transmission systems, Energy Audit and Energy Asset Management, Power Electronics and Drives systems and Condition Monitoring. In addition, students take a Strategy and innovation module to develop their ability to view their technical skills within the context of global solutions and needs. The MEng team project allows students to explore and apply their learning to the development of a new product or the modification of an existing product or service to develop and consolidate skills in team-working, engineering leadership, business and social awareness. The MEng degree provides you with the opportunity to attain an integrated Masters award and so demonstrate professional readiness to employers.
